FRANKIE SPEAKING - Part 4

PART IV – 1966 PWLLEHELI

Wendy and I applied for the ’66 season, again at Pwllheli and this was our last year with the company before we came to Australia in December of 1966. I recall as we were sailing half way down the Red Sea that a voice from behind me declared “you’re a long way from Butlins”. It was a 1964 camper who recognised me. Small world.
Wendy and I were married in 1967 and now have four children, in their early 40’s and late 30’s, plus 8 grandkids. I am still a Redcoat at heart and have lived my entire life as a Redcoat. I have never forgotten Butlins and the friends I made. Wendy and I are still in touch with fellow Red’s who have been friends for over 40 years.

Bingo was always a hard detail. Frankie Bull, Ray Pyke, and Pete Noonan.
(Glasses were borrowed & stacked.
We couldn’t possibly drink that much and continue working.)

Butlins was and always will be a significant part of my life. If I could turn back the clock I would gladly do it all again. Wendy and I visited Pwllheli Camp (by then Haven) in 2000 and I commented on the attitude of some of the Haven entertainent staff. A little Welsh guy on the main gate summed it up for me, in words I will never, ever, forget. He said, “I’ll tell you what, boyo, these people ‘ere wouldn’t ‘old a candle to a real Butlin Redcoat.”

They were good days and we were special people.

                                               I rest my case.
